The Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM) Innovation Grant is one of the most accessible state-level grants available to early-stage Kerala founders. Unlike central government schemes that require lengthy documentation, KSUM prioritises speed and founder accessibility — making it ideal for startups at the Idea, Prototype, or early MVP stage.
Who is Eligible?
To qualify for the KSUM Innovation Grant, your startup must:
• Be incorporated or registered in Kerala (private limited, LLP, or OPC)
• Be less than 5 years old from the date of incorporation
• Be at Idea, Prototype, or early MVP stage
• Have a product or service with clear innovation merit — not a generic service business
• Not have received more than ₹50L in previous government grants (state or central)
Sectors prioritised: Hardware, IoT, AgriTech, HealthTech, EdTech, CleanTech, and AI/ML products with a social impact component.
Grant Amount
The KSUM Innovation Grant provides between ₹5 Lakh and ₹10 Lakh as a direct grant (no repayment required). The exact amount is determined by KSUM's evaluation committee based on the quality of your prototype, technical merit, market potential, and team strength.
Required Documents
Before applying, ensure you have the following ready:
1. Certificate of Incorporation (from MCA/ROC)
2. DPIIT Startup Recognition certificate (critical — applications without this are deprioritised)
3. GST registration (if applicable)
4. Founders' Aadhaar cards and PAN cards
5. Pitch deck (10–15 slides: problem, solution, market, prototype demo, team, funding ask)
6. 2-page project report (what the grant will fund, timeline, expected outcomes)
7. Bank account details for the startup entity
8. Any prototype photos, demo video link, or technical specification document
Optional but strengthens your application:
• Letters of intent from potential customers
• Any existing IP filings or research publications
Application Process

Step 4: Upload all required documents.
Step 5: Submit your pitch deck and project report.
Step 6: You will receive an acknowledgment email within 3 working days.
Step 7: If shortlisted, you'll be called for an in-person or virtual presentation before the KSUM Grant Committee.

Common Rejection Reasons
• Missing DPIIT recognition — the single most common blocker
• Generic project report that doesn't specify how the grant will be used (avoid saying "for operations")
• Pitch deck not tailored to KSUM's criteria — they care about social/economic impact in Kerala
• Startup age exceeds 5 years
• Applied in the wrong grant cycle (check opening/closing dates carefully)
• Company registered outside Kerala
Tips From Approved Founders
"Keep your project report hyper-specific. KSUM wants to know exactly what you'll do with ₹7 lakh — not that you'll use it for growth." — Vikram Rajan, HydroVolt Energy
"Apply during the first week of the cycle opening. Early applications tend to get more thorough review." — Divya Krishnan, NexaLearn
"Get your DPIIT certificate before anything else. It took me 4 days and unlocked every state scheme simultaneously."
