The Indian Grant Stacking Playbook: Stacking ₹42L in Non-Dilutive Capital

Startups in the pre-seed or prototype phase are often trapped in a cycle of searching for one-off funding sources. High-growth founders, however, use a method called "Grant Stacking." By stacking multiple non-dilutive sources (grants, interest-free loans, and cloud credit vouchers) simultaneously, you can easily secure up to ₹42 Lakh in early-stage runway without giving up a single percentage of equity.

Stacking is organized in layers based on deployment speed and eligibility criteria:

Layer 1: Infrastructure Credits (AWS Activate, Google for Startups Cloud Program). These take 3–7 days to approve and cover 100% of your initial server, compute, and database runtimes ($25k–$100k value).

Layer 2: State-Level Prototype Grants (e.g. KSUM Productisation Grant, StartupTN TANSEED). These take 4–8 weeks and disburse ₹7L to ₹15L directly to your current account for building a working prototype.

Layer 3: Central Government Grants (MSME Idea Hackathon, Startup India Seed Fund). Stricter rules but offer up to ₹20L in pure non-repayable grants.

The most important compliance rule in government funding is the prohibition of "double-dipping." This means you cannot claim funding from two different schemes for the exact same project expense. For example, if KSUM grants you ₹7 Lakh to hire a hardware engineer, you cannot use MSME Hackathon funds to pay that same engineer. You must partition your expenses: use KSUM for hardware components and MSME for marketing and cloud deployments.

1. Month 1: Obtain DPIIT Startup Recognition and file Udyam MSME (Free).

2. Month 2: Apply to AWS Activate for $25,000 credits to cover server runtime.

3. Month 3: Submit to KSUM Productisation Grant (₹7 Lakh) for early prototype components.

4. Month 4: Enter MSME Idea Hackathon (₹15 Lakh) for pilot manufacturing testing.

Total non-dilutive capital: ₹22 Lakh cash + $25,000 credits. Equity diluted: 0%.
